Safety at the beach is something that we think of, but don’t always pay attention. This is especially true when we’re sitting relaxing and enjoying the amazing 30A Florida sunshine! When you’re here visiting the Emerald Coast, we definitely want to share this PSA, Public Service Announcement. Our waters can also be “PSA”—Peaceful, Safe and Active! No matter what the beach flag is, it can always be seen flying at our regional and walking public access points in Walton County.
The Walton County Fire Department has posted at each of its beach access points a sign denoting the flag and what it means for the day. While these are a guide, it is always best to stay vigilant as Gulf waters can, and do change! Safety should always come first.
The flags are listed below, and can also be read about on the South Walton Fire Department website.
Green Flags: Green Flags means that calm conditions exist.
Yellow Flags: Yellow Flags mean that moderate current conditions exist.
Red Flags: Red Flags denote that high hazard conditions exist, and “knee deep is too deep.”
Double Red Flags: Double Red Flags show that water activity is prohibited.
Purple Flags: If there is a purple flag accompanying one of the above flags, it means that dangerous sea life may be in the water (jellyfish or other sea pests).
The flags are generally updated daily, text “SAFETY” to 31279 and you will receive the beach flag report for the day. Even if you’re at home and it’s chilly and snowing and you’re dreaming of a 30A beach vacation, you can receive the text daily for a fun daily dose of 30A sunshine!
